Some dangerous chairs invite you to sit on them

CENTRAL SAINT MARTINS COLLEGE OF ART AND DESIGN
PG DIP CHARACTER ANIMATION
FINAL PROJECT
We were commissioned to develop an animated project which has any relation with a painting we had to choose from the National Gallery in London. I was charmed by "The chair of Van Gogh".
And this is my project.

CONCEPT
How did I make the relation between the painting and my project?
First of all I wrote down all the ideas I had about chairs. The concepts I finally had were these:
1. Chairs are those such objects which are for a long period with you and you hardly notice their presence.
2. Chairs are an extension of yourself, of your body, of your personality.
3. Chairs (old furnitures in general) keep stories and experiences.

With this concepts I started to work in my idea.

THE FORMER IDEA
Originally I had this idea. Here you can see the Animatic of that. I took an old woman as the main character and the chair. Here I gave emphasis to the idea that your old stuffs are an important part of your life.

CHARACTER DESIGN
I wanted something simple for the old woman. I drew with rounded lines to build the face which allowed me to highlight the glasses. In the beginning I had a nice character but because of its face this might have been either a male or a female character.
So I decided to round up the lines and expressions. I removed the mouth and I gave more importance to the cheeks.
The result of this is a cute character but with a strong personality.
